The Surestart framework - Birth to three matters

This curriculum is a developmental framework from birth to three years old. The framework recognises the Childs individuality, efforts and achievements. From birth a child has a need to develop, learn through interaction with people and explore the world around them.

The principles which underpin the framework come from a number of resources including child care writers, experts and practitioners.

They are as follows:

- Parents and families are central to the well being of the child.
- A Key person at home and in the setting is essential.
- Babies and children are social beings they are competent learners from birth.
- Learning is a shared process with a trusted and competent adult whom is actively involved    and interested.
- Schedules and routines must flow with the Child's needs.
- Children learn by doing rather than by being told.
- Children learn to be independent by having someone they can depend upon.

The frameworks focus is the child. It identifies four aspects, these are the four aspects:

- A Strong Child
- A Skilful Communicator
- A Competent Learner
- A Healthy Child

The Foundation Stage Early Learning Goals (ELG)

Foundation Stage Curriculum

The House of Colours offers an early year's Foundation Stage Curriculum.
The Foundation Stage is a period of education from age 3 to 5 years old, which gives children a secure foundation.

Children in the Foundation Stage are highly active and "learn through play". Play is the "key" to the way in which children learn. The teachers and the Learning Support Assistants (LSA) support and extend the child's learning development, both as individuals and in group settings with a range of planned topics to suit all ages and stages. The Director plans daily, weekly and term time activities to incorporate a curriculum in an international setting, using a "hands on" approach and the Early Learning Goals. (ELG)

Art and craft activities play a very large part in the House of Colours, and there are daily opportunities for your child to develop their fine motor skills (small hand muscles) using a variety of materials - For example play dough, chalks, crayons, paints, learning how to glue and use scissors with safety. Music is included in our timetable and we offer lots of songs, poems and stories.

Added learning experiences help the children to develop their English language conversational skills, with carefully planned role play situations, for example the play house, a hospital, hair dressers station, a castle, a shop, even a pop idols stage! Mathematics is introduced throughout the year with colours, shapes, numbers, and mathematical vocabulary. Simple science experiments are also included.

To develop your child's gross motor skills (large body muscles) physical activities and time outside in our outside tent and garden area allow the children to socialise and enjoy games with added opportunities to use water and sand activities.

The introduction of the Jolly Phonics (letter sounds) programme is a proven method that uses songs, hand, body actions, and creative art work to be able to recognise letters and link them to sounds to develop early reading skills.

Parents are sent a weekly letter keeping them fully informed of all the planned activities. The House of Colours is safe, fun and active, the children will be happy and learning in a great environment.
