What is role play? Children love to pretend and they use their imagination to see how it feels to be someone else, this is called role play and the children can experience without taking any risk.

Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSE)

We provide the opportunity for the children to take on different roles, explore their feelings, learn more about the world around them and add new words to increase their language.

Home corner

The Nursery is provided with a home corner. Children love to spend hours in this area, which is fully fitted with a kitchen, cooker, iron board and iron, baby bed and dolls, tables, chairs, cutlery, crockery, fruits, vegetables and other foodstuffs!

This area is very important to young children as it reminds them of their own home, kitchen and family, and is often the first area they play with when they are starting Nursery, they imagine their role as mothers, fathers, cooks, housekeepers, maids, or helper and keeps them feeling secure. The home corner enables children to cook, wash, iron, put the baby to bed, make cups of tea, etc… all increasing their social sharing and language skills.

Hello dolly

Dolls are the nearest thing to another human being. In children's activities they play a large part in role play, as comforters and as an aid to developing hand to eye co-ordination (when children dress and undress them). Dolls are used to help social and personal development. Children "talk" to their dolls and are an ideal way to encourage children to be sensitive to the needs of others, develop their own personalities and talk about their family's background.

Themed areas

There are many other different types of role play situations that we can introduce, and we try to link them to topics throughout the year.

- Shop - selling food, green grocers, market stall, supermarket, or a    restaurant
- Clothes - boutique, launderette, shoe shop
- Transport - airport, bus or train station, garage or spaceship
- Holiday - travel agent, camping, picnic or the seaside
- Myself/my body - doctors, dentist, hairdressing salon or hospital
- People who help us - policeman, fireman, postman, nurse, doctor
- Communication - post box/office
- Fantasy play - castle, pop idol stage

Play and learning

When we provide an area for role play, we promote "learning through play" for example, when the children are playing in the play hospital area with hospital instruments and practicing on the dolls (and each other!) they learn not to be afraid of doctors and nurses. In the play shop they learn to deal with money and service and every day items needed for daily shopping and eating. With the right adult intervention we can stretch the children's play, helping them to develop imagination and new skills.

Dressing up box

We provide a variety of dressing up clothes for role play and animal costumes. We encourage the children to dress and undress themselves using accessories of bags and hats.

Role play - play hospital

Young children are fascinated both by the world of make believe and by small objects. Small world play and role play plays a large part of their lives, offering them the chance to explore the physical world as well as their own feelings and relationships with other people.

Puppets, dolls and play figures can provide the means to escape into a world of fantasy. Model farms, garages and hospitals along with all the accessories, can help young children to find out how things work and the way the environment functions.

Play is the way through which young children learn, as they are continually investigating and exploring and trying to make sense of their world and what they see, hear and feel.  The House of Colours places a great deal of emphasis on planning topics that are practical and enjoyable learning activities.

The presence of an adult helper can increase a child's concentration, promote and stimulate discussion and extend their vocabulary. It is essential to observe the child carefully and not impose your ideas but instead ask open ended questions to stimulate their thoughts - How? Why? What? Who? When? Listening to the child's answer will give a good indication of their level of understanding and provides us with a basis for further questions.

Recently we have introduced this topic through circle time discussion, posters, books, songs and lots of accessories. Our Learning objective is - to investigate our health care and how to keep healthy.

Questions to ask - Why might we visit a hospital? (Because we have had an accident/need a check up/need an operation/are having a baby/area visiting a patient/have suddenly become ill) Who looks after us in the hospital? How do people get to hospital? We will be looking at ourselves, parts of the body, a skeleton, growing people, and staying healthy.
